African - Americans after Reconstruction

Essential Question
1) List all methods southern states tried to limit the power of African-Americans
  • Southern states made laws resticting African Americans
  • Voting restrictions - African Americans had to take a literacy test; which asked more difficult questions than whites or also given the test in a foreign language.
  • Polltax - Didn't have enough money to pay polltax; s therfore they couldn't vote. HOWEVER..
  • The whites enforced the Grandfather Clause - this was the way of saying yeah you could vote BUT ONLY IF YOUR GRANDFATHER were abke to vote before JAN 1st, 1867
  • Laws created to seperate blacks and white also known as Jim Crow Laws
  • Seperate but Equal - Supreme cout said it was ok to be seperate as long as it was equal.

2) Hw is racism today different than racism practied immediately after reconstruction?
Racism today is different than racism practiced in the reading in a verity of ways. These ways consist of how back in the day classrooms, hospitals, even simple things such as waterfountins were seperate. In addition, back in the day racism was IN YOUR FACE as opposed to now, its more subliminal. Also, laws for instance: Voting restictrions, Polltax, Grandfather Clause, and Jim Crow no longer exist.

The U.S. was the country that was faavored because they have the key that regulates everything.

2)What were the reasons behind the Boxer Rebellion?
The chineese boxer rebellion killed a bunch of foreigners as well as the chineese who convereted to christianity, because countries were coming in trying to take over.

- Esiponage and the Sedition Act affected freedom of speech by not letting yu say what was on your mind. it affected labor unions by going to jail for wanting better working conditions/wages

a) Why did Jose Marti destroy U.S. property?
He distroyed U.S. property because he wanted the American government to get involved with the war to free Cubans
b) Who did the de LOme letter criticize? What were the consequences? How did this private letter become public in the first place?
- The letter critized President McKinley, leaving consequences for the minister to resign. The letter became public because it was sold to a news paper company; which had been stolen from the post office.


c) Who was the "winner" of the Spanish-American War, and what were the winning?
- Due to the 'Treaty of Paris' The United Stated won the war. Cuba one it's independence; however, Guam and P.Rico were under the hands of the U.S. In addition they bought the Philipines for $20 mill.

- The Spanish-American war connected with American Imperialism because they wanted to take over land.

e) How was the war started? Was it proper?
- The war started by yellow journalism which was where new paper companies exaggerate events such as the ship. No i dont not think it was proper.

Coming to the United States 1870's

1)How much time was the trip from Europe and Asia, and how would you have liked it?
- The trip crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Europe which took approximately one week; however, the Pacific crossing from Asia took about three weeks. I believe I wouldn't have enjoyed it because it seemed crowded, with people dieing attracting deases.
2)What are the names of the main immigration processing stations in San Fransisco and New York? Describe the immigrant's experience at each.
- There were two processing stations which were Castle Garden in New York. Immigrants were held there for about a day or even longer. Processing immigrants took about five hours. They had to pass a physical examination by a doctor, if you had a disease you were sent home, if they passed they would then report to a government inspector. The government inspector would then check documents and ask further questions. One of the requirements included proving that they never been convicted as a felony.
-Another processing station was Angel Island. Chinese immigrants entered the United States through this station were hardly questioned.
3)How did Denis Kearney try to stop Asian people from entering California in 1882? Why did he do this, and how would you feel if you were Chinese?
 -Denis Kearney tried to stop Asian people from entering California in 1882 by the Chinese Exclusion Act. This act banned all Chinese from entering with the exceptioonn of students, teachers, merchants, tourist, and government officials. If I were Chinese during that era I would feel mistreated because I wasn't receiving the same respect white people got.
4)In 1907-08 the Gentleman's Agreement did two things. What were they?
-Compromising to limit immigration of unskilled workers to the United States in exchange for the repeal of the San Fransisco segregation order was one of the Gentleman's agreements.
-The Agreement did two things, for instance it limited emigration of unskilled workers to the United States.Second, the exchange for the repeal of the San Fransisco segregation order.
