Labor Unions Emerge PG. 67

  1. Based upon what I have read, labor unions were good because they stoop up for what they believed in which was better working conditions for their hard work.
  2. The tenement it self; with a ladder only reaching the 6th floor.
  3. The Triangle Shirt Waist Factory was a sweatshop in which 146 seamstresses died because a fire occured and they were locked in. It was located on the 9th floor; however, the fire escape only reached the 9th. Due to the monopolist, the workers were caged in because of the fear of losing merchandise. These deaths could have been prevented if they had better working conditions and had realiable tools such as better water sprinklers and a ladder that was capable of reaching.
  4. This is the IWW's logo, socialist who wanted workers rights to be met.
  5. Monopolists did not want unions because they simply rebelled against them. Union members did not like scabs because they were replacing them when they were on strike.
  6. Many factory and sweatshop owners disliked the vision of unions like the IWW because they were socialist; which were people who also fought for workers rights.

Hopelessly Bound to the Stake

Essential Question:

Did government have any responsibility for placing workers on the stake?

Article: http:/goo.gl/9Cpj4
  • "This cartoon signifies the cruel treatment by the workers"
  • "Laborers were forced to work fourteen to sixteen hour work days, they worked in unsafe conditions, and they were paid ab0out $400-500 a year while living costs estimated $800 a year."
  • "As a consequence to this unfair treatment, workers began organizing labor unions"

1)What are three pieces of information you chose?  Why did you choose the three?
-- I chose these parts of the article because they represented the cruel treatments they receive from the monopolist. The first part shows that monopolies were wealthy and did not treat their workers with respect. The second part reveals that workers worked too much for too little. It also showed how they cared about themselves more than others. Lastly, the third part proves that workers later rebel against all the mistreatment by forming groups to go against the monopolies.
2)Were labor unions necessary? Why?
-- Labor unions were necessary because monopolist such as Andrew Carnegie took advantage of their workers and they rebel by forming labor unions to fight for their rights.
3)Did the government help make monopolies? How?
-- The government helped the monopolist by donating money to the legislative branch to help ensure they would have a say in the laws being made. If the monopolies had a say to the laws the government were making they would try to make laws that would better fit their businesses.
4)How did money in politics contribute to this cartoon? How has this changed?
-- Money in politics contributed to this cartoon because the monopolies are the ones who are the wood, meanwhile, the working men is the one being burned. The difference between now and then is that the people with money are not fat or wear top hats any longer. Money still plays a huge part in the world

Are The Old Bosses Still in Charge?

Essential Question:

Whose voice is loudest in government?

1) The setting for the cartoon appeared to be in the Senate. The legislative branch to be specific, who's job was to pass laws.
2) The 'Entrance for Monopolist' is open, while the door for the 'People' is closed. This is important because it shows how the rich fat-men had more power then the people.
3) The large men at the back of the room represent the rich people/special interest.
4) They're in the room in the first place because the special interest groups are people who try to influence how the law is going to be written.

Significant Statement: http://goo.gl/0Ugks

This article was about how the people felt frustrated. They were flustered because they felt that the people that were suppose to represent them, were in it for themselves. They also felt this way because they had no say.

Opinion:

I believe the voice of the government is the loudest. I say this because it's obvious they have more power then the people.

"Their responses were striking, though their frustration is not new. Seven in ten said people like them have little say in what their government does; eight in ten said most members of Congress are primarily interested in serving special interests, not the people they ostensibly represent."

Rise of Industry & Monopolies

Essential Questions:

1) What were the main three causes of industrial growth in America?
----- There were three main causes of industrial growth in America. Among the three were natural resources. Natural resources played a major part in the growth of industry because in order to start a business they must have the product. The products they were willing to buy out were things such as: coal, iron, gold and steel. Another cause was the governments support for business. They gave money, to make money. The last cause was the growing labor population. This was when immigrants started moving in to the city.

2) Trusts and monopolies during America's early industrial age created. .. .
----- Trusts and monopolies during America's early industrial age created many outcomes. If it were not for the wealthy monopolist such as: Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller and J.P.Morgan, we probably wouldn't have the things we have today. Although these entrepenours were ignorant to the fact that social darwinism was a fib, they did become philantripists and contribute a lot. Because of these men, railroads and the well known Brooklyn bridge was created.

Haiku

Because of Electricity.
Who cut the lights on?
Where is Thomas Edison
Oh, that's a light bulb.

------------------------------------------------------
My haiku and images display my understanding and importance of electricity because it proves that Thomas Edison was the first man to produce a workable light bulb. Not only was his invention workable, but it also was incandescent. Meaning it would give off visable light as a result of beig heated. This was just a stepping stone though, he later then went on to invent an entire systerm of producing and distributing electrical power.

Major Events & People Pre Civil War

1. Around 1815, the United States was divided geograaphically - north and south - with the Southern states dependent on slave labor while the Northern states reformed to become more industrialized wanting to abolish slavery.

2. The country was so divided by the issue of slavery, California made a deal for the Compromise of 1850 to become a state. Both Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas gave the option for states to decide whether or not they wanted to condone in slavery. They decided this by popular sovereignity or by voting. In addtion, southern states recieved fugitive slave laws that meant any slave that escaped to the north had to return to the 'owners.'

3. Around this time many southern states were seriously considering succession, which is when a state wants to leave the union.

4. Many people from the North hated slavery, they were the main ones who tried to help the fugitive slaves escape; also known as abolitionist. They helped them seek freedom by hiding them in multiple hiding places along the route to Canada. This route condisered to be the well known Underground Railroad.

5. When Uncle Tom's Cabin was published, Harriet B. Stowe described how slaves were taken to the "slave market" to be bargained. Northern states were angry simply because they weren't for the thought of slavery, while Southern states thought wrong about it because they seen it as criticizing their way of life.

6. Two politicians became famous for their slavery debates, Stephan Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Both Douglas and Lincoln were against slavery; however, they did share differences with the ideas of dealing with it. Lincoln felt slavery should have been abolished because it was against a person's natural rights. On the other hand, Douglas believed people should decided through popular sovereignty.
7. On December 20, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Which then caused Southern states secession from the Union. The first state to seceded was South Carolina, followed by many others.

Marijuana Legalization in Colorado and Washington

1. Cite examples of "Supreme Law of the Land"
-"Marijuana is still illegal in the eyes of the federal government, which overrules states' rights."
2. Cite examples of "federal vs. state authority"
-"Federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug."
3. What was the "compromise" that helped to pass the referendum in Washington? How do you think this compromise would affect demand for the product?
-The compromise that helped pass the referendum in Washington by the process of a heavy tax for marijuana. I think this compromise would affect the demand of marijuana buyers negativity because in this economy people are in poverty and can't afford to pay with the increase of the sales tax. It would impact the individuals who don't use marijuana positively because it makes the uses have to pay more for a drug that now has been legalized.
4. Why was Oregon's referendum not passed?
-Oregon's referendum was not passed because it would have handed most of the regulating power in the marijuana industry to the growers rather than independent overseers. Half a dozen marijuana referendums in total, with three of them proposing legalization for recreational purposes, and the others dealing with medical marijuana.

Obama Victory Tweet

1.What audience did the article say social media was targeted to? Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
-Social media was targeted to Twitter, Facebook, and email. I agree that Twitter, Facebook, and email were used to target audience because it is the fastest way to communicate, share, and respond during this time of the world.
2. According to the article, which candidate was most effective using social media? (cite a passage from the article)
-"The words "four more years", coupled with a photo of Barack and Michelle Obama embraced in a hug, have become the most retweeted Twitter post ever. The US president tweeted the message at 0416 GMT, and it has since been retweeted over half a million times. It underlined the now pivotal role social media plays in informing and persuading potential voters."
3. According to Jeffrey Hermes, taking a picture of your marked ballot can be used to pressure people standing in line to vote. Do you agree or disagree, and why?
-"Display of a marked ballot to voters waiting in the queue can be used as a form of pressure to vote similarly, or to confuse voters who have difficulty reading English as to how to mark their own ballots".
- I agree that display of a marked ballot influences voters opinion because someone may choice one person over another in order to feel like they are going with the crowd or someone who may not understand how to correctly mark the ballot, therefore, they copy what they see as a sample.

Diary Entry 7

December 4th 1819
Dear Diary,
Out of my 327 years of living I’ve watched myself as well as our government grow. I can actually admit that my life WAS worth living. I guess the main reason of saying this was because I got to witness history in the making. I had the opportunity to meet historical people such as Columbus, Jefferson, Locke, Washington, Hancock and many others. Lately I’ve been sick and there is nothing I can do. I am now in New York lying in my death bed and the only thing I am capable of is encouraging you to get involved. Now, I have no clue who ‘you’ are but whoever finds this diary please take my advice. If I had the chance to go back I think I would go and encourage my people to stand up for their rights and what they believe in. Hopefully by the year 2019 our government will be in order and we will have a president that knows how to run the country. Perhaps maybe even a women elected as president or even a different race like Mexican American. The three strike law will be overturned, and marijuana law will be passed in all states. If we can get the legislative branch to pass laws like these then everyone would live peacefully. Whoever captures this dairy take care of it and share it.

Diary Entry 6

Dec 3rd, 1791

Dear Diary,

Today I and Jeremiah met at the river where we took a long relaxing walk through the December snow. He told me all about the meeting that was held yesterday with his father John Locke, and representatives such as John Hancock, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin so on and so forth. He said there would be a system that provided citizens with rights. I forgot what exactly he said because it was so much to comprehend. But he explained how the anti-federalists’ demand for rights stemmed from their fear of a strong central government. Turns out all state constitutions guaranteed individual privileges and seven of them happened to be a bill of rights. Eventually the federalist agreed but only if the state would ratify the constitution. They also authorized 10 amendments to the constitution which became the Bill of Rights.

He also continued to go on and break down the thirteen colonies that had been established. I’m not sure if I remember but I think they were Georgia, Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Boy that was a long list. Jeremiah stated that by the year 1819 there would be an additional nine colonies that would include:
Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Delaware, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and New Hampshire. The momentous decisions that they made have resounded through American history. Well, that’s all for now. Goodnight

Diary Entry 5

April 16th, 1789
Dear Diary,

Today was pretty hectic. I had to wake up very early because I was asked to help babysit Thomas Jefferson’s kids Eston, Harriet, and Madison Hemmings. When he mentioned that the meeting would be held in New York I got nervous because I wasn’t sure how I would get there and I didn’t want to let him down. I mean come on now, he’s Thomas Jefferson! Then he pulled out all of our flight tickets and we boarded his private jet. This must be the life. Private jets, lots of money, I envied him. All of them, even his kids. They were handed everything while I must work for mine. Man these kids were mean and very spoiled and a living hell. When we got there they begged their father to leave us in the chamber room where we were still able to hear the whole thing. He and George Washington addressed the controversial issues about a new government plan.  I assumed they were scared of me since they wouldn’t speak. It never hit me why Mr. Jefferson asked me; out of all people, to watch his children. Then little Eston told me that his mom Sally, was a mixed-raced slave. A native one, then it all made sense.  After our brief conversation, the kids continued to sit and play with their toys. So I sat and listened. And boy did I listen very carefully. This conversation between George Washington and the congress lead to an entirely new government.
Although the constitution provided a strong foundation, it was not a detailed blueprint for governing. So they started off by explaining two of the problems they had to deal with. One of the first tasks Washington and congress dealt with was the fact that they did not have a judicial system. They solved this by announcing the Judiciary Act of 1789 which allowed state court decisions to be appealed to a federal court when constitutional issues were raised. The next problem they faced was how to create a well running executive branch. This would help the president govern by the development of the three executive departments. These departments consisted of: the Department of State, War and Treasury. The head honchos of these sections were Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and Henry Knox. Even though it sounded good, I could feel that one day these leaders would bump heads because of their conflicting visions.

As I was listening, I realized how Hamilton’s ideas about The United States new legal system would have no care for me and my people. It wouldn’t allow us to have a voice. Or state our opinion. But the voices that would count would be those of prosperous, educated elite of upper class. Basically rich white men. That is why I agree with the two party systems, it authorizes us to have individual rights, and the opportunity to stand up for what we believe in.
Soon we will prevail!
